Oceanside is a charming beach city located 35 miles north of San Diego and 83 miles south of Los Angeles in North County. It ranks 2nd in the United States for best climate with around 10 inches of rain per year and an average day time temperature of 69 degrees Fahrenheit. One of the longest wooden piers on the West Coast is the historic Oceanside Pier, spanning 1,942 feet in length. It was opened in 1987 as the city's sixth pier to be built and actually the fifth at this location; it is located on Third Street.
Camp Pendleton United States Marine Corps calls Oceanside its home. If you are in the US services this is the place you'd like to be assigned. The residents on average are young (median age 32) with the 1st Marine Division residing here. Over 38,000 personnel inhabit the area and gives Oceanside some of its personality. The area is fast paced as well as growing fast with a young and busy population.
While there is the military on the local economy, Oceanside is a great spot to call home or to come on vacation. They have a beautiful 3.5 mile long beach and a boat harbor with 1,000 slips which offers half day and full day fishing trips, numerous boat excursions as well as shopping and dining. The historic Mission San Luis Rey is just 4 miles from the beach and Carlsbad which is home to Legoland. Legoland is one of California's most unique amusements for young children between the ages 3 to 12.
Golf courses in the area include: The El Camino Country Club, Emerald Isle, Oceanside Municipal, and Center City.
Special attractions include: Oceanside Harbor and the 1942 foot wooden recreational pier, San Luis Rey Mission Museum and Retreat, pier fishing, sport fishing, sailing, surfing, International Gymnastics Hall of Fame, Thursday morning Farmers' Market, surfing contests, whale watching in January and February and Harbor Days in September.
There are Nine parks, 3.5 miles of public beaches, four community centers, and two public swimming facilities. Pendleton includes three mountain ranges, bike trails, and recreational facilities. The beaches have nice, soft sand with volleyball sand courts and fire rings where you can warm by a beach bonfire.
