La Jolla

La Jolla, known as "the Jewel By the Sea" is the most desirable and prestigious neighborhood in San Diego County. The sunsets and the views are what "The Jewel" is known for. Overlooking the town is Mount Soledad (822 feet above sea level). Road planning throughout the area allows for stunning views. La Jolla's ocean view bluffs, beautiful canyons, and sandy beaches make this seaside town unlike any other.
University of California, San Diego, the Salk Institute, and Scripps institute of Oceanography are situated here. Other medical research and bioengineering facilities are strategically placed near the University, allowing many residents a short commute to work. This community has probably the second largest concentration of Biotechnology in the country, behind Boston.
Being a part of the City of San Diego, La Jolla is not its own city but certainly has the reputation of one. It hosts a large art community and many retired Hollywood stars & Nobel winners. Near Prospect Street and Girard is the village which is one of La Jolla's best attractions. There are many shops, boutiques, galleries, and a multitude of four-star restaurants. Just east of Interstate 5 is La Jolla's business center with high rise offices, hotels, apartment complexes, and a large Westfield shopping center.

The Public schools have a reputation of ranging into the 80th to 90th percentile for statewide scores. In 2002 La Jolla High School was granted permission to run the school program as the faculty saw fit. A large bond from San Diego residents will renovate and improve all San Diego schools, including La Jolla. Because of the university's facilities and the many educated residents, the arts community thrives and clubs meet regularly. Facilities and events include a sports complex / concert hall at UCSD, Concerts in the park, the La Jolla Festival of Arts, two golf courses, about 10 parks, a library, one of the countries only computer labs, and the La Jolla Playhouse, founded with the help of the late Gregory Peck.
