Coronado is Spanish for "the crowned one," where it gets it's nickname The Crown City. It is also nicknamed The Tent City from back in the days when the hotel staff of the Hotel del Coronado used tents as living quarters.
Coronado is a peninsula connected to the mainland by a 10 mile strip of land called the Silver Strand or The Strand. A two mile bridge, the San Diego-Coronado Bridge, built in 1969, connects Coronado to Downtown which provides the local commute. The distinct blue arch is large enough to allow battleships passage underneath to US Naval Air Station at North Island, a post that consumes over half of Coronado. This includes training grounds for Navy Seals, but still provides plenty of beachfront and great shopping in this island village. Ferry service is also available to downtown San Diego.
Orange Avenue is the main thoroughfare and offers a delightful collection of shops and services including a small movie theater. There is also a public 18-hole golf course, a driving range, 17 parks, bike paths, and a town swimming pool.
Coronado Cays is home to the Coronado Cays Yacht Club which sits on the bayside of the Silver Strand.
