Cardiff-by-the-Sea is a beach community within the city of Encinitas and is located approximately 95 miles south of L.A. and 25 miles north of San Diego. The Pacific Ocean is located to the west of Cardiff, Encinitas is on its east and north, and a beach and lagoon on its south.
Cardiff-by-the-Sea was founded in 1911 by J. Frank Cullen. Cardiff was taken in honor of his wife's native Wales and English names dot the streets. A German developer and musician, Victor Kramer, then later added by-the-Sea. The locals are proud of the fact that you can walk to the beach, lagoon, Restaurant Row, post office, and markets as well as other services. You can find Italian, Mexican, and California cuisine all with many seafood dishes.
Activities in the area include camping and a day at the beach at San Elijo Beach Campground, Glen Park has tennis and basketball courts and a children's paly area, and There are baseball and soccer fields at Cardiff Sports Park. Water-related activities include swimming, surfing, sunbathing, wind sailing and strolling along the shore. Additional activities; hiking, jogging, boating, tennis, fishing, hang gliding, bicycling, or nearby golfing. There is great year round surfing for all types and abilities at Cardiff Reef along Historic HWY 101; you have the choice of both left and right breaks.
